Russia’s capital, Moscow, has been hit by one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks, since the start of the war, with nearly 200 drones reportedly targeting the city and surrounding areas, causing fires, flight disruptions, and panic among residents.
The overnight assault struck key areas in southeast Moscow, including a major oil refinery that supplies fuel to the capital region. The attack sparked a large fire at the facility, sending thick black smoke into the sky and forcing emergency crews to respond. Industry sources reported damage to important refinery units, and that has increased the concerns over fuel production disruptions.
Residents in affected areas shared videos showing heavy smoke above the city, with some reporting what they described as “black rain,” which is dark soot and residue falling after the refinery blaze. Officials disputed some descriptions of the phenomenon but acknowledged the presence of heavy smoke and pollution concerns.
The drone wave also disrupted air travel, with operations temporarily affected at several Moscow airports as authorities imposed restrictions. Hundreds of flights were delayed or cancelled as security measures were increased around the capital.
Russian officials said air defense systems intercepted large numbers of drones across the country, while authorities described the attack as one of the most significant strikes on Moscow during the conflict. The Kremlin has warned of possible retaliation, as tensions between both sides continue to rise.
