The United States has approved a $1.96 billion weapons package for Saudi Arabia, reinforcing the kingdom’s air defense capabilities as regional tensions escalate with Yemen’s Houthi movement. The sale, approved by the U.S. State Department, includes up to 20,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) II laser-guided rockets and related support equipment.
According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the proposed sale is intended to improve Saudi Arabia’s ability to counter drone and aerial threats while enhancing interoperability with U.S. and allied forces. The package now moves to the U.S. Congress for review before any final contracts are signed.
The approval comes amid renewed military friction involving the Iran-backed Houthis, who have continued attacks across the region using drones and missiles. Analysts say the precision-guided rockets are particularly effective against low-cost drone threats and reflect Washington’s continued commitment to strengthening Gulf allies’ defensive capabilities.
