Dangote Refinery IPO 2026: ₦2.15 Trillion Share Offer Targets 10 Million Investors

nigeria refinery ipo 2026

The Dangote Refinery IPO 2026 is shaping up to be more than a huge fundraising exercise. Aliko Dangote wants the ₦2.15 trillion share offer to bring millions of ordinary Africans into the ownership of one of the continent’s biggest industrial projects.

The refinery’s IPO documents were signed in Lagos on Monday, with 4.1 billion shares priced at ₦525 each. The offer is expected to open on September 14 and close in October, with the company targeting as many as 10 million retail investors.

Dangote Wants Ordinary Nigerians to Own the Refinery

The unusual part of the Dangote Refinery shares for Nigerians story is who Dangote says he wants as shareholders. The billionaire said the offer is intended to give people across different income groups an opportunity to own part of the refinery, including drivers, cooks, traders, managers and other workers.

The minimum subscription is set at 10 shares, meaning investors could participate from ₦5,250, according to details reported by the transaction advisers. That low entry point is central to the plan to attract millions of smaller investors rather than relying mainly on wealthy individuals and institutions.

Why 10 Million Investors Matters

The target could make the ₦2.15 trillion Dangote IPO a major moment for Nigeria’s retail investment market. The transaction advisers say the target of 10 million investors would be about 20 times Nigeria’s current retail participation record. The offer will also be distributed electronically through banks, fintech platforms, stockbrokers and other financial intermediaries.

If Dangote reaches that target, the impact could go beyond the refinery itself. Millions of Nigerians who normally see major industrial companies as businesses owned by billionaires could become shareholders in one.

The Money Will Also Fund a Bigger Refinery

The IPO is not only about widening ownership. Dangote Refinery plans to use the funds alongside other financing to support a major expansion.

The refinery currently has capacity of about 700,000 barrels per day, with plans to increase this to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2029. Reuters reported that the wider expansion programme is expected to cost about $14.3 billion.

That means investors are being offered a stake not only in the refinery as it exists today, but potentially in a much larger energy business.

For Nigeria, the bigger question is whether Dangote Refinery IPO 2026 can successfully combine mass ownership with the capital needed to expand one of the country’s most important industrial assets.
