Axel Disasi joins Crystal Palace on loan from Chelsea for the 2026/27 season, giving the Eagles an experienced defender as they rebuild their back line.
The Axel Disasi move to Crystal Palace is particularly interesting because it comes shortly after Chelsea signed Maxence Lacroix from Palace. The two clubs have effectively exchanged defenders, although Disasi’s move is only temporary.
Chelsea confirmed the loan on Wednesday, with Disasi set to spend the season at Selhurst Park. The Frenchman has made 61 appearances for Chelsea since arriving from Monaco in 2023.
Why Crystal Palace Wanted Disasi
The Axel Disasi loan gives Palace something they badly need: Premier League experience.
Palace lost Lacroix to Chelsea during the summer and have also had to manage changes across their defence. New manager Pierre Sage has been looking to add an experienced centre-back, particularly with Palace preparing for a season that includes European football.
Disasi can play at centre-back and right-back, giving Sage another option when injuries or tactical changes affect his defence.
He also knows the Premier League well. Before returning to Chelsea, Disasi spent time on loan at Aston Villa and West Ham, including 14 league appearances for West Ham last season. That experience could make his arrival more than simple squad depth.
A Fresh Start for Disasi
For Disasi, this could be an important opportunity to restart a career that has stalled at Stamford Bridge.
The 28-year-old has not been part of Chelsea’s main plans and has now been sent out on loan for the third consecutive season. His previous spells at Aston Villa and West Ham gave him regular football, but neither resulted in a permanent move.
Palace offers him another chance to prove that he can still perform at a high level. The fact that there is no reported buy option also makes the move interesting. Disasi will need to perform well enough to convince either Palace or another club that he deserves a permanent home next summer.
What It Means for Chelsea
The Chelsea transfer news also tells us something about the club’s defensive strategy. Chelsea have replaced some of their outgoing defenders with younger or more highly valued options, including Lacroix, who signed from Palace on a contract running until 2032.
That leaves Disasi outside the immediate picture. For Chelsea, another loan can help give him playing time while reducing the number of senior defenders competing for places. For Disasi, regular football at Palace could be the best way to rebuild his reputation.
The Lacroix Connection Adds Another Layer
The Maxence Lacroix Chelsea move makes this deal feel almost like a defensive swap. Palace lost one centre-back to Chelsea and have now brought another Chelsea defender in to fill the gap.
The bigger test will come on the pitch. If Disasi settles quickly and helps Palace remain competitive in the Premier League and Europe, the move could prove useful for everyone involved.
For now, Palace get experience, Chelsea clear space, and Disasi gets another chance to show what he can do.
