2027 Election Campaign Begins: Tinubu Builds APC Campaign Council as Peter Obi Takes His Message to Voters

Nigeria’s 2027 election campaign has officially moved into a more serious phase, and the early signs suggest that the battle will be fought on two very different fronts: political organisation on one side and direct voter engagement on the other.

The Presidency has released the 108-member APC Presidential Campaign Council, giving President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign a broad structure covering media, legal affairs, finance, strategy and regional coordination. Former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo is also among the names on the council. The structure is headed by Tinubu as chairman, with Vice President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda as vice chairmen.

At the same time, Peter Obi has launched his 2027 presidential campaign in Onitsha, signalling that the opposition is not waiting for the APC to dominate the early campaign period.

Why the APC Campaign Council Matters

The size of the APC Presidential Campaign Council is significant because the 2027 election will not be won through rallies alone.

With 108 members handling different areas of the campaign, the ruling party is building a machine designed to sell Tinubu’s record across different regions and voter groups. Former Zamfara governor Abdulaziz Yari has accepted the role of Director-General, while Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma will serve as secretary.

The real test, however, will be whether the structure can translate political connections into votes. The APC will need to defend its economic record while addressing the concerns that have dominated public discussion over the past three years, including inflation, food prices, unemployment, insecurity and the impact of subsidy reforms.

The inclusion of people with different backgrounds, including Yobo, also suggests an attempt to broaden the campaign beyond traditional politicians and reach younger Nigerians.

Peter Obi Takes a Different Route

While the APC is unveiling its campaign machinery, Peter Obi has started by focusing heavily on the issues he believes should determine the election.

Speaking in Onitsha, Obi said Nigeria must move from a consumption-driven economy to one based on production, investment and job creation. He identified agriculture, manufacturing, technology, energy and creative industries as key areas for growth.

Obi also challenged presidential candidates to face voters directly and defend their records. His message was clear: Nigerians should judge candidates based on what they have achieved, what they plan to do and whether their policies can improve everyday life.

The Real Battle Starts Now

The interesting part of the 2027 election is that both camps are already revealing their strategy. Tinubu’s APC is building a large political organisation around incumbency, while Obi is trying to make the campaign a referendum on the country’s economic and social condition.

That means the coming months could become a battle between record and promise. The APC will ask voters to consider the reforms and changes introduced under Tinubu. Opposition candidates will ask Nigerians whether those reforms have actually improved their lives.

The winner may ultimately be the candidate who provides the more convincing answer to one simple question: Has Nigeria become better for the average Nigerian?
