Diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and South Africa remain high following the reported killing of two Nigerian nationals amid a wave of anti-migrant protests and enforcement operations that have unsettled foreign communities across South Africa. The latest developments have prompted fresh calls from Abuja for justice, accountability and stronger protections for Nigerians living in the country.
The Federal Government has condemned the deaths of Emeka Charles Iroegbu and Musa Yunana Joe, describing the incidents as deeply troubling at a time of growing hostility toward foreign nationals. Nigerian officials have urged South African authorities to conduct thorough investigations, prosecute those responsible and ensure the safety of Nigerians residing legally in the country.
As part of its response, Nigeria’s High Commission in Pretoria has begun documenting businesses, homes, vehicles and other assets abandoned by Nigerians who fled the unrest. The exercise is intended to support a formal compensation claim against the South African government for losses suffered during the anti-migrant crisis. Hundreds of Nigerians have already returned home under the Federal Government’s voluntary evacuation programme, while others continue to register for repatriation.
The crisis has also strained diplomatic relations between the two African powers. While Nigeria insists affected citizens deserve justice and compensation, South African officials have called for evidence to be submitted through diplomatic channels and maintain that investigations into the reported killings are ongoing.
The renewed tensions come against the backdrop of recurring xenophobic violence in South Africa, where migrants have increasingly become targets during protests linked to unemployment, crime and illegal immigration. Analysts warn that unless both governments reach a constructive resolution, the crisis could further affect bilateral relations, trade and regional cooperation across the continent.
