Voting has commenced across Ekiti State as residents take part in the 2026 governorship election, with early reports showing the arrival of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials and election materials at several polling units. Some locations recorded strong voter presence, including areas linked to incumbent Governor Biodun Oyebanji.
The election pits the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate and incumbent Governor Biodun Oyebanji against challengers including Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Oluwole Oluyede and other contenders.
Hours into the exercise, controversy emerged after Isaac Fayose, brother of former Ekiti Governor Ayo Fayose, accused INEC of allowing uncollected Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to be used for alleged vote-buying activities.
Fayose claimed that the small number of remaining uncollected PVCs among registered voters had become a tool for political actors to influence voters. He alleged that some APC agents were using the situation to facilitate vote-buying involving non-indigenes.
The allegation has not been confirmed by INEC, which has not issued a direct response to the claims. Electoral observers have continued to call for vigilance and adherence to voting rules as the election progresses.
The Ekiti election is being closely watched due to the state’s strong political history and its importance in Southwest Nigeria. Security agencies have been deployed to maintain order, while election monitors continue to observe the process.
Despite reports of some polling challenges, there have been no widespread reports of major violence during the early stages of voting. Many residents are hoping the election will remain peaceful and transparent as results begin to emerge after voting ends.
