A routine police operation in the United Kingdom turned into a major security response after officers found suspected explosives, a firearm and drugs inside a home in Worle, near Weston-super-Mare. The discovery on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, forced authorities to evacuate 153 properties while specialist bomb disposal officers searched the area.
The incident began when police went to a property on Becket Road to arrest a 70-year-old man in connection with an ongoing fraud investigation. What officers found during the initial search quickly changed the situation, leading to a 100-metre cordon and the involvement of the military’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit.
Routine Fraud Arrest Becomes Security Operation
Police initially arrested the man on suspicion of fraud by false representation. During the search, however, officers discovered tubs containing substances they suspected were explosives, along with other suspicious items.
Because of the potential danger, specialist EOD officers were called to assess the property. Authorities then began evacuating homes inside the 100-metre cordon, with 153 properties affected. Residents who could not stay elsewhere were provided with access to an emergency rest centre.
The scale of the response shows why the discovery inside one residential property quickly became a neighbourhood-wide issue. Bomb disposal teams could not safely enter the house until residents within the cordon had been moved to safety.
Bomb Squad Finds More Than Explosives
The EOD team eventually entered the property at about 7:30 p.m. and recovered the suspected explosive substances. Police said the materials were safely removed and destroyed.
A room-by-room search then uncovered additional items, including a firearm, an air rifle and drugs. The discovery resulted in the 70-year-old man being further arrested on suspicion of possessing explosive substances for an unlawful purpose. He remained in police custody as investigations continued.
The cordon remained in place overnight before being lifted at about 6:15 a.m. on Thursday, October 1. Residents were then allowed to return to their homes.
Police Say There Is No Wider Threat
Despite the scale of the evacuation, authorities have said there is no indication of a wider threat to the public. Avon and Somerset Police described the incident as isolated while detectives continue investigating how the suspected explosives, firearm and drugs came to be inside the property.
Police also attended another location of interest near the A370 at Hewish on Thursday morning. The search of that non-residential site ended without any items being found, according to the force.
For residents, the immediate danger has passed, but the incident highlights how quickly an ordinary police investigation can become a large-scale emergency when potentially dangerous materials are discovered in a residential area. The next stage will be determining the origin of the items and whether the suspect will face additional charges.
