The latest Professor X rumor has Christopher Abbott emerging as the frontrunner for Charles Xavier in Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot. Abbott and Tom Pelphrey reportedly tested for the role, although Marvel has not officially confirmed Abbott’s casting.
And honestly, Professor X is only one piece of the puzzle. Marvel’s new X-Men team is starting to take shape, and there are a few names fans should be watching closely ahead of the expected casting announcements.
Sadie Sink (Jean Grey) is already one of the biggest names attached. She has been confirmed as Jean and has reportedly already begun working with director Jake Schreier ahead of the reboot.
Kit Connor (Cyclops) is also reportedly set to play Scott Summers. That pairing with Sink is particularly interesting because Cyclops and Jean are two of the most important relationships in X-Men history.
Then there’s Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, another reported casting that could hint at Marvel taking the Hellfire Club seriously in this new version. Beyond those three, the rumor mill gets much messier.
Charles Melton has been linked with Beast, while Cailee Spaeny has been linked with Rogue. Inde Navarrette has also been mentioned for Mystique, although these remain rumors rather than official Marvel announcements.
And then there’s the huge question: Who is playing Magneto? Adam Driver has been linked to major villain roles, including Magneto and Mister Sinister, but reports have been conflicting. Wolverine is another major mystery, with current casting reports surprisingly quiet about Logan.
That’s what makes the potential D23 reveal so exciting. Marvel isn’t just casting another superhero team. It’s rebuilding one of the most recognizable comic-book franchises ever, following Patrick Stewart, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman and the rest of the Fox-era cast.
And the studio appears to be going younger this time. Sink herself has called the younger generation of mutants a smart direction for the franchise.
So if you’re watching the X-Men casting news, don’t just watch for Christopher Abbott. Watch for Magneto, Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, Beast and Nightcrawler. That’s when we’ll really know what Marvel is building.
