An Israel-bound Flydubai flight narrowly avoided disaster on September 30, 2026, after the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain and attempted to take control of the aircraft. The Flydubai cockpit attack sent the plane plunging nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds before passengers and crew intervened.
Flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 people on board when the incident occurred. The injured captain managed to unlock the cockpit door, allowing passengers to enter and overpower the co-pilot. A reserve crew member then helped land the aircraft safely at Tabuk in Saudi Arabia.
How Passengers Helped Stop the Attack
The incident quickly became a fight for control of the aircraft. After the captain opened the cockpit door, passengers moved in and restrained the co-pilot while the plane was still in serious trouble.
The captain, identified as Indian national Smit Machchhar, was injured but survived. Passengers and crew were also credited with helping prevent what Israeli officials described as an apparent attempt to crash the aircraft. The aircraft later reached Saudi Arabia, where the captain and co-pilot received medical treatment.
The flight’s descent was particularly alarming. Tracking data showed the aircraft dropping almost 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds, followed by emergency signals indicating a serious incident and later unlawful interference.
Netanyahu Claims Radicalisation Is Being Investigated
The motive behind the Flydubai flight to Israel attack has not been conclusively established. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on October 1 that initial information indicated the Omani co-pilot had undergone what he described as radical Islamist indoctrination.
However, the UAE has launched a formal investigation to establish the circumstances, motive and whether the incident had any connection to terrorist activity or prior planning. Investigators are therefore still working to determine what happened and whether anyone else was involved.
The suspect has since been transferred from Saudi Arabia to the UAE for further investigation. Both the captain and co-pilot were moved to Abu Dhabi after receiving medical treatment in Saudi Arabia.
Flydubai Suspends Israel Flights
The incident has already affected regional aviation. Flydubai suspended flights between Dubai and Israel while the investigation continues, while Israeli authorities said they would increase security checks on pilots flying into the country.
That response could become one of the most important consequences of the Flydubai cockpit attack 2026. Aviation authorities already conduct extensive background and fitness checks on pilots, but the incident has renewed questions about how crew members are vetted and monitored after they are cleared to fly.
For now, investigators face two separate questions: what drove the co-pilot’s actions, and whether existing aviation security procedures were sufficient to prevent a crew member from becoming a threat inside the cockpit.
The passengers survived, but the incident has exposed a rare and serious aviation vulnerability that authorities will now have to examine closely.
