The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released prominent Obidient Movement supporters Peter Akah and Precious Oruche, popularly known as Mama Pee, after hours of questioning over allegations of naira abuse.
The pair honored an invitation from the anti-graft agency on Wednesday and were interrogated for about 11 hours before being released around midnight. They have, however, been directed to return for further questioning as investigations continue.
According to their lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, the investigation centres on a viral video in which Peter Akah was seen spraying what investigators initially believed were naira notes.
Effiong said his clients explained that the items used in the video were prop money for entertainment purposes, not genuine Nigerian currency. He also noted that the EFCC conducted the interrogation professionally and that the duo cooperated fully with investigators.
Following their release, Akah and Oruche thanked supporters for their concern, insisting they would not be intimidated. Akah urged Nigerians to register to vote ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that they would continue their political activities despite the investigation.
The case has sparked heated debate online, with supporters alleging political intimidation while others argue that the EFCC is simply enforcing existing laws against naira abuse. The commission has yet to announce whether formal charges will be filed.
