The Kano State Government has distributed modern working tools to 1,900 butchers drawn from the state’s 44 local government areas as part of an empowerment program aimed at improving livelihoods, strengthening food safety and modernizing the meat industry.
Speaking during the distribution ceremony at the Government House in Kano, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said the initiative forms part of his administration’s broader strategy to support small businesses, reduce poverty and create sustainable economic opportunities. He stressed that butchers play a vital role in the food supply chain and urged beneficiaries to maintain strict hygiene standards in meat processing to protect public health.
Beyond the empowerment program, the governor announced plans to establish cottage industry and enterprise hubs across Kano under the 2026 state budget. The hubs will include dedicated facilities for meat processing, leather production and tannery operations, creating an integrated livestock value chain expected to generate more jobs and add value to local products.
Chairman of the Kano State Butchers Association, Alhaji Nasiru Isyaku, described the intervention as unprecedented, saying the equipment would improve professionalism and welfare within the trade. He pledged that members would uphold better hygiene and operational standards while making productive use of the tools provided.
