Super Eagles coach Éric Chelle is preparing to name two separate Nigeria squads this week as the national team begins its 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign while also preparing for a friendly against Russia.

The decision gives Chelle an opportunity to separate immediate competitive demands from his longer-term plans for Nigerian football. The established senior players are expected to handle the qualifiers, while younger players will get an opportunity to impress against Russia. 

Senior Stars Face Immediate AFCON Test

The main Super Eagles 2027 AFCON qualifiers will see Nigeria face Madagascar in Uyo on September 25 before travelling to Guinea-Bissau four days later.

Chelle is expected to keep most of his established internationals for those matches because Nigeria will want a strong start to the qualifying campaign. At least one new player could also receive a senior invitation as the coach continues to assess his options.

The fixtures will provide an early test of whether Chelle can build on the progress made during his first period in charge of the Super Eagles.

Russia Friendly Becomes a Talent Test

The second squad is where the selection becomes more interesting. Nigeria will face Russia on October 6, with Chelle expected to use largely U-23 players for the match. Because he also oversees Nigeria’s Olympic team, the friendly gives him a chance to assess players who could become important during the next Olympic cycle.

That means the Super Eagles Russia friendly 2026 could function as more than a normal international exhibition. Players outside the regular senior group will have an opportunity to show they can compete at the highest level.

Reports have already linked several younger players with the extended plans, while Portugal-based striker Umar Abubakar has reportedly received an invitation for the Russia match.

Chelle Is Planning Beyond One AFCON Campaign

The two-squad approach suggests Chelle is trying to build depth rather than depend on the same group of players for every international assignment. For Nigeria, that could become important as the Super Eagles manage AFCON qualification while preparing another generation for future competitions.

The immediate priority remains clear: beat Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. But the Russia game could reveal which younger players Chelle believes are ready to move closer to the senior team.

The first major clues will come when the two Eric Chelle Super Eagles squads are officially announced this week.
