The Odogwu Asaba rape allegations have taken another turn after the wife of Asaba-based content creator Ifeanyi Ogbonna publicly defended her husband, saying he had an affair with 20-year-old Favour Agbro but did not rape her.
Her comments add a new dimension to a case that has already drawn intense attention online following Favour’s death and Ogbonna’s arrest.
What the Wife Is Saying
In a video shared on Wednesday, Ogbonna’s wife said she had followed the case closely before deciding to speak. She maintained that her husband did not rape or kill Favour and said she would continue to stand by him.
She acknowledged that the two had an affair but rejected the allegation that the encounter involved rape. She also urged Nigerians not to treat social media discussions as a substitute for the legal process.
Her position is significant because it introduces a direct defence from someone close to the accused, while the police investigation is still ongoing.
What the Police Say About the Favour Agbro Case
The Favour Agbro case began after police said the 20-year-old travelled from Warri to Asaba on June 1 following an invitation from Ogbonna, who allegedly offered to mentor her on content creation and help her monetise her social media accounts.
According to the police, Ogbonna allegedly took her to a hotel where she was sexually assaulted and physically attacked. Favour later returned home, recorded an account of what she said happened and subsequently ingested a toxic substance. She died while receiving medical treatment.
Ogbonna was arrested after a petition from Favour’s family. He has not been convicted, and the allegations remain subject to investigation.
Why the Case Has Become Bigger Than Social Media
The Odogwu Asaba arrest has raised difficult questions about the relationship between online influence, young people seeking mentorship and the responsibility that comes with having a large public platform.
Favour reportedly travelled to meet someone she viewed as a potential mentor. That makes the case particularly sensitive because it involves questions about trust, power and what can happen when professional opportunities move from online conversations into private meetings.
The case has also shown the danger of allowing social media to become the courtroom. Police have continued investigating, while the public has already formed strong opinions on both sides.
What Happens Next?
The Delta State police investigation will be central to determining what happened. Police have previously said the suspect would face legal proceedings, while reports have also indicated that forensic and autopsy work formed part of the investigation.
For now, the wife’s defence does not settle the allegation, just as the allegation itself does not establish guilt. The evidence gathered by investigators will ultimately matter more than competing claims online
