Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde Faces a Big Test as Flick Demands More With Cancelo Competition

Alejandro Balde is entering the new Barcelona season with something to prove. Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has made it clear that talent alone will not guarantee Balde a place in his team. With João Cancelo back at the club and competition for places increasing, the 22-year-old left-back now has to show the commitment and consistency Flick expects.

Flick praised Balde’s quality ahead of Barcelona’s LaLiga opener against Elche on Sunday, but stressed that every player must fight for their position in training. He also refused to completely rule out a possible departure for Balde before the transfer window closes.

Why Flick Is Putting Pressure on Balde

The message from Flick is bigger than one player. Barcelona have strengthened their squad this summer, meaning competition for starting positions is becoming tougher. Cancelo has returned permanently from Al-Hilal and has already trained with the team ahead of the Elche game.

That gives Flick another experienced option at full-back and makes Balde’s position less secure than it was before. For a young player who has already established himself at Barcelona, this could either become a problem or an opportunity.

Flick appears to want the latter. His comments suggest that Balde cannot expect to start simply because of his reputation. He has to earn his place every day.

Cancelo Has Changed the Competition

Cancelo’s arrival is particularly interesting because he can operate on both sides of the defence and offers a different attacking threat.

During his previous spells at Barcelona, the Portuguese defender made 65 appearances, scoring six goals and providing nine assists. He has also won league titles in England, Italy and Germany.

Barcelona clearly see his experience and attacking ability as useful additions to Flick’s squad. Balde therefore has to compete with a player who has already worked at the highest level and understands what Flick wants from an attacking full-back.

There is also competition from younger players. Reports have suggested that 17-year-old Jordi Pesquer has impressed Flick during pre-season, adding another layer to the battle for defensive places.

Is Balde’s Barcelona Future Really in Doubt?

There is no indication that Barcelona have decided they want Balde gone. Instead, the situation appears to be about competition and standards.

Manchester United have reportedly shown interest in the defender, while his agent Jorge Mendes has been involved in discussions around his future. That could make the final days of the transfer window interesting.

If Balde accepts the competition and responds with stronger performances, Cancelo’s arrival could actually benefit him. Having a proven player competing for his position could push him to improve rather than become comfortable.

But if his playing time falls significantly, Barcelona may have to consider whether keeping him is best for both the player and the club.

Flick’s Message Is Simple

Barcelona are trying to build a squad capable of competing on several fronts. For Flick, that means nobody gets a guaranteed place.

Balde has the talent to remain an important part of that squad, but the coach is demanding more than talent. He wants players who show hunger, discipline and commitment every day.

The Elche opener could therefore be the beginning of an important chapter for Balde. Cancelo may have arrived to strengthen Barcelona, but his biggest impact could be forcing Balde to raise his game.
