Leon Goretzka to Aston Villa: Why the Free Agent Could Be the Midfield Fix Unai Emery Needs

Aston Villa may have found an unexpected solution to their midfield problem. The Premier League club are in talks with former Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka over a possible move to Villa Park. The 31-year-old German is a free agent after leaving Bayern this summer, and negotiations are reportedly progressing after Villa missed out on João Palhinha.

Goretzka has reportedly spoken directly with Unai Emery about the possibility of joining Villa. A final decision from the midfielder and a medical are still needed before the deal can be completed.

Why Aston Villa Need Leon Goretzka

The timing of Villa’s interest is important. Villa had been trying to bring in Palhinha to strengthen their midfield, but that move collapsed after the Portuguese midfielder moved towards a deal with Benfica. At the same time, Villa have lost Youri Tielemans and are dealing with an ACL injury to Amadou Onana.

That leaves Emery needing experience and quality in an area that could become a weakness during a long season. Goretzka is not a direct replacement for Palhinha because he offers more going forward. Last season, he scored five goals and provided three assists in 31 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern.

His ability to carry the ball, make late runs into the box and contribute goals could give Villa another dimension in midfield.

A Proven Winner for a Changing Villa Team

Goretzka would also bring something that Villa have been losing during a major squad reshuffle: experience at the highest level. He spent eight seasons at Bayern, making 312 appearances, scoring 51 goals and providing 53 assists. He also won seven Bundesliga titles and was part of Bayern’s Champions League-winning team in 2020.

That experience could be valuable for a Villa side entering another demanding season under Emery. The club have already lost several important players this summer, including Tielemans and Morgan Rogers, while questions remain over the futures of Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martínez.

Bringing in a player who has spent years competing for trophies could therefore be about more than filling a position.

Can Goretzka Adapt to the Premier League?

The biggest question is whether the German can still perform at the level Villa need. At 31, Goretzka is no longer the young midfielder who arrived at Bayern in 2018. But he remains physically strong, technically capable and highly experienced.

The move would also give him his first opportunity to play in the Premier League, adding a completely different challenge to his career. Villa’s interest therefore looks less like a panic move and more like an attempt to add experience without paying a transfer fee.

If Goretzka accepts the proposal and passes his medical, Emery could have a proven European midfielder arriving just as Villa prepare for another demanding campaign.

For a club dealing with several important departures, that could prove to be a very useful piece of business.
