EFCC, ICPC Probe ₦12bn NFF Fund, Raising Fresh Questions About Transparency in Nigerian Football

efcc icpc probe nff fund

The EFCC and ICPC investigation into the ₦12 billion NFF fund could become much bigger than a financial investigation. At its core, the case raises a question Nigerian football has faced for years: what happens to public money after it enters the football system?

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) are investigating the use of a ₦12 billion Federal Government intervention fund released to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for players’ wages, allowances and bonuses. The NFF disclosed the investigation while responding to a Freedom of Information request for financial records relating to the money.

Importantly, the investigation does not mean that wrongdoing has been established. The NFF has said the relevant documents are currently with the two anti-graft agencies, while the specific transactions or individuals being investigated have not been publicly identified.

Why the ₦12bn NFF Fund Matters

The money was not ordinary football funding. The Federal Government approved the intervention in January 2024 to address outstanding payments owed to Nigeria’s national teams, including player bonuses, allowances and salaries for coaches. Reports said some payments had remained outstanding for more than a year.

That makes transparency particularly important. When government releases billions of naira to solve a specific problem, Nigerians should be able to see how much was received, how much was paid to players and coaches, what other expenses were covered and what remained.

The fact that an FOI request has now collided with an ongoing investigation makes those questions even more important.

This Is About More Than the Super Eagles

The investigation comes at a difficult time for Nigerian football, where disputes over player payments and football administration have repeatedly become public.

It also comes after the NFF recently highlighted its collaboration with the ICPC on anti-corruption and integrity issues. In July, the federation held a sensitisation seminar with the anti-graft agency aimed at promoting transparency and reducing corrupt practices within its operations.

That makes the current investigation particularly significant. The NFF has also previously stressed that money received from FIFA and CAF is tied to specific purposes and subject to auditing. The same standard should apply to government intervention funds.

What Nigerians Should Expect Next

The biggest development to watch is not simply whether the EFCC or ICPC finds evidence of wrongdoing. It is whether the investigation produces a clear financial trail.

Nigerian football supporters deserve to know what happened to the ₦12 billion. If everything was properly spent, a transparent investigation should be able to establish that. If money was misused, those responsible should face the consequences.

For the NFF, this is also an opportunity to rebuild confidence in the way public money is managed.

Because football may be entertainment, but when billions of naira in taxpayers’ money enter the game, football administration becomes a public accountability issue too.
