Nigerian Afrobeats star Burna Boy has once again sparked a football debate after naming former Super Eagles captain Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha as his personal greatest footballer of all time.
During a recent interview with ESPN, Burna Boy was asked about his football GOAT but refused to enter the familiar Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo argument. Instead, he went for a Nigerian icon whose reputation has long been built on flair, creativity and unforgettable moments.
“I will say Jay Jay Okocha. It is between him and Pele. I am not doing that Ronaldo or Messi stuff,” Burna Boy said.
The choice is consistent with Burna Boy’s previous football preferences. In a 2025 appearance on Complex’s GOAT Talk, he also named Okocha among his favourite players, alongside Brazilian legend Ronaldinho and current Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen.
Okocha’s appeal goes beyond his achievements. The former attacking midfielder became renowned worldwide for his dribbling, tricks, creativity and ability to entertain, earning him legendary status during spells with clubs including Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers. The International Federation of Football History & Statistics describes him as one of Africa’s greatest players and highlights his exceptional technique and creativity.
Burna Boy’s answer has therefore opened another round of discussion among football fans, particularly Nigerians who grew up watching Okocha turn defenders inside out.
The singer also revealed other football favourites during the interview, including Harry Kane as his favourite striker, Lamine Yamal as his favourite young player and Kobbie Mainoo among Manchester United players. He also identified Manchester United as the club he supports.
