Tom Holland has revealed that Marvel and Sony already have a long-term plan for eventually passing the Spider-Man mantle to another actor, giving fans a glimpse into how the franchise could continue beyond his run as Peter Parker.
Speaking about the future of the character, Holland said there is “a whole plan” for handing over the role. He explained that the plan has been discussed since Spider-Man: No Way Home, although he acknowledged that it will inevitably change as the franchise develops.
Holland has previously spoken about wanting to remain involved in Spider-Man’s future even after he eventually steps away from playing Peter Parker. Rather than simply disappearing from the franchise, the actor has expressed interest in helping mentor the next Spider-Man, drawing comparisons to Robert Downey Jr.’s role in guiding him when he joined the MCU.
The possibility of Miles Morales taking over has naturally become a major talking point among fans. Holland has discussed Miles as a character he would like to see inherit the mantle, although his latest comments do not confirm that Miles will definitely be the successor.
Holland also appears to have no immediate plans to leave the role. His comments come as he promotes Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which opens in cinemas on July 31 and begins a new chapter for Peter Parker following the events of No Way Home.
For now, Holland remains Spider-Ma, but it appears Marvel already has an idea of what happens when the time eventually comes to hand over the web-shooters.
