Afrobeats superstar Davido has triggered a major online debate after publicly attacking former presidential aide and political commentator Reno Omokri during an escalating dispute over the singer’s campaign for the release of abducted Oyo State schoolchildren.

The controversy began after Davido used a global platform to draw attention to the ongoing Oyo abduction crisis, wearing a customized outfit featuring the names of abducted pupils and teachers alongside the message “Bring Them Home.” The move received praise from many Nigerians who saw it as an attempt to keep pressure on authorities and highlight the victims’ plight.

However, the gesture also attracted criticism from APC supporter and singer Dauda Kahutu Rarara, who accused Davido of taking Nigeria’s security challenges to an international audience, and argued that the issue should not be politicised.

Responding to the criticism, Davido accused Rarara of focusing on politics instead of the safety of the abducted children. The singer later turned his attention to Reno Omokri, mocking him on social media with the phrase “Umu Bingo @renoomokri fowl.”

Omokri later responded, saying he was surprised by Davido’s language and arguing that using an international stage to highlight kidnappings could unintentionally give publicity to criminal groups. He said Davido’s intentions may have been positive but questioned whether the approach could create unintended consequences.

The exchange has divided social media users, with some defending Davido’s activism and others supporting Omokri’s argument about security messaging. Critics of Omokri accused him of inconsistency, while supporters said the debate highlights the complicated balance between public awareness and national security concerns.
