Cristiano Ronaldo played his last international game for Portugal Monday night as his team lost 1-0 to European champions Spain at the Dallas Stadium.
Ronaldo had announced 48 hours ago that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be his ‘last dance’ for Portugal and was looking to go as far as he could take his national team to.
The hopes of Portugal were however dented as the game seemed to head to extra time when late substitute Mikel Merino found space at the edge of the box to receive a Ferran Torres pass and clinch the winner.
Spain also defeated Portugal in the semifinals of the 2024 European championship two years ago on their way to lifting the trophy.
Los Rojas will face either the USA or Belgium in the quarterfinals.
