El-Rufai N10bn Defamation Suit: Defence Minister Given Seven Days Over Southern Kaduna Claims

el rufai n10bn defamation suit

The El-Rufai N10bn defamation suit threat has raised the stakes in a growing dispute between former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and Defence Minister Christopher Musa.

El-Rufai’s lawyers are demanding ₦10 billion in compensation and a public apology over statements Musa made during a September 3 appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today. However, the money has not been awarded by a court. It is a demand for compensation contained in a letter before action.

Musa Given Seven Days to Respond

The El-Rufai Defence Minister Musa dispute centres on comments concerning insecurity and the former governor’s record in Kaduna.

According to El-Rufai’s lawyers, Musa alleged that the former governor deliberately planned killings in Southern Kaduna, paid bandits and ordered demolitions against opponents. The legal team says the claims are false and defamatory and have damaged El-Rufai’s reputation.

The lawyers are demanding a public retraction and an apology on Politics Today, as well as publication in two national newspapers. They have also asked Musa to preserve and disclose the recordings, documents and sources relied upon when making the allegations.

Musa has been given seven days to respond. If there is no satisfactory resolution, El-Rufai’s lawyers have warned that legal action could follow.

El-Rufai Rejects the Southern Kaduna Claims

The most serious part of the dispute concerns the El-Rufai Southern Kaduna allegations. El-Rufai’s lawyers insist that their client has never been involved in deliberately planning killings in the area and say no evidence has been produced to support the claim.

They also rejected the allegation that El-Rufai paid bandits, saying the former governor has consistently maintained that he would not negotiate with or pay them. The legal team further defended demolitions carried out during his administration as actions taken for public purposes and in accordance with the law.

The Dispute Is Already Raising Tensions

The case is now moving beyond a disagreement between two senior public figures. Muslim and Christian leaders in Southern Kaduna, under the Jama’atu Nasril Islam and Christian Association of Nigeria, have called for restraint and dialogue following the controversy. Their intervention suggests concern that the argument could deepen existing political, religious and regional tensions.

For now, the next major development will depend on Musa’s response. He could provide evidence supporting the allegations, agree to a settlement or retraction, or allow the matter to proceed towards court. If the dispute reaches litigation, the focus will shift from political statements to whether the claims can be proven and whether they meet the legal test for defamation.
