Sergio Busquets is back at Barcelona, but this time he will not be controlling the midfield.
The former Barcelona captain has joined Barça Atlètic as an assistant coach under Juliano Belletti, beginning the first stage of his coaching career while he completes his coaching course. Barcelona confirmed the return on Monday, bringing one of the most intelligent midfielders in the club’s history back into the environment where his football education began.
For Barcelona, however, this is about more than giving a club legend a job.
Busquets Can Teach What Statistics Cannot
Busquets’ greatest strength was never his speed or physical power. It was his understanding of space, positioning and what was happening before the ball even reached him. That makes his new role particularly interesting.
Working with young players at Barça Atlètic gives Busquets the chance to pass on details that are difficult to learn from a coaching manual. He spent 15 years with Barcelona’s first team, made 722 appearances and won 32 trophies, including nine La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies. With Spain, he also won the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.
Now, some of the club’s younger midfielders will get to learn directly from someone who spent years playing the position at the highest level.
This Is Not a Shortcut to the Barcelona Job
There will naturally be excitement about Busquets eventually becoming Barcelona’s first-team coach, especially because the club has a long history of former players moving into management. But that is not what is happening yet.
Busquets is joining Belletti’s staff while working towards his coaching qualifications. He is essentially starting again, this time learning how to communicate and develop players rather than simply understanding the game himself.
That distinction matters. Being an outstanding footballer does not automatically make someone an outstanding coach. Busquets now has to learn how to explain his ideas, manage personalities, plan training sessions and make decisions from the touchline.
Barcelona Is Keeping Its Football DNA Close
There is also a bigger reason this appointment makes sense for Barça. Busquets is a product of La Masia. He understands the club’s football culture from the inside, having developed through Barcelona’s youth system before becoming one of its greatest players.
He is now returning to the same development structure to help prepare the next group. Belletti, another former Barcelona player, is already leading Barça Atlètic. Together, they give the reserve side two people who understand what it means to wear the Barcelona shirt at the highest level.
For a club that relies heavily on academy players, that experience can be valuable.
Could Busquets Follow the Guardiola Path?
The comparisons with Pep Guardiola are already obvious. Guardiola went from Barcelona player to coaching the club’s B team before eventually taking charge of the first team and becoming one of the most successful managers in football.
Busquets is now beginning his own journey in a similar environment. There is no guarantee he will follow the same path. But Barcelona have given him the perfect place to find out whether his legendary understanding of football can become a coaching career.
The next chapter of Busquets’ Barcelona story has started. This time, he gets to teach the next generation how to see the game the way he always did.
