For anyone who grew up watching Disney Channel in the late 2000s, this feels less like a movie premiere and more like somebody opened a time capsule.
Demi Lovato is back as Mitchie Torres for Camp Rock 3, reuniting with Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas at the Los Angeles premiere on Monday. The Jonas Brothers return as Connect 3, while Maria Canals-Barrera is also back as Mitchie’s mum, Connie. The film premieres August 13 on Disney Channel and August 14 on Disney+.
And honestly, the biggest appeal isn’t even the plot. It’s seeing Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers together again.
The original Camp Rock arrived in 2008, when Disney Channel was practically its own universe for a generation of young viewers. Demi was Mitchie. Joe was Shane. Nick and Kevin were Nate and Jason. The songs were everywhere, the hairstyles were questionable and somehow everyone knew the choreography to This Is Me.
Sixteen years later, the same people are walking another red carpet together. Lovato’s return is particularly special because her involvement had initially been announced primarily as an executive producer. She is now confirmed to make a cameo as Mitchie, while also serving as an executive producer alongside the Jonas Brothers.
The new film passes much of the spotlight to a younger generation, with new campers competing for a chance to open for Connect 3 during their reunion tour. But Disney clearly understands that bringing back the original stars is part of the attraction.
And that’s why this wave of nostalgia feels different. We’re watching the people who were our childhood stars become the adults returning to the worlds we grew up with.
There have been plenty of reunions and reboots, but Camp Rock 3 taps into something particularly powerful: an entire generation that grew up with Disney Channel is now old enough to look back at those films with nostalgia while introducing them to a completely new generation.
And yes, the 2000s Disney nostalgia machine is clearly still running. But for now, Mitchie and Connect 3 are giving us the reunion we actually wanted.
