Nigeria has achieved a major milestone in its downstream petroleum sector, with domestic refineries supplying 100% of the country’s aviation fuel (Jet A-1) demand for the past 13 consecutive months, completely eliminating the need for imports. Official industry data shows that no aviation fuel imports have entered the country during the period.
The shift has been driven by increased output from local refineries, led by the Dangote Refinery, which has significantly boosted domestic production of aviation turbine kerosene. The development marks a sharp turnaround from previous years when Nigeria relied heavily on imported jet fuel to meet airline demand.
Industry stakeholders say the achievement is expected to strengthen energy security, reduce pressure on foreign exchange, improve fuel availability for airlines, and lower the country’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products. It also reinforces Nigeria’s growing refining capacity as domestic production continues to replace imports across key fuel products.
