Former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika has defended the economic record of late President Muhammadu Buhari, insisting that the former administration left behind a “flourishing” Nigeria despite widespread criticism of its economic performance. Speaking on ARISE Television ahead of activities marking the first anniversary of Buhari’s death, Sirika rejected claims that the Buhari administration plunged the country into hardship.
Sirika argued that, based on his experience in government, Nigeria was in a good state economically and socially during Buhari’s tenure. He described Buhari’s leadership style as one focused on ordinary Nigerians and maintained that the former president laid a solid foundation for future administrations. The former minister declined to criticise President Bola Tinubu’s policies, saying it would be unfair to judge decisions made by an administration in which he does not serve.
His remarks have reignited debate over Buhari’s legacy. Critics point to economic indicators recorded near the end of his administration, including high inflation, rising public debt, unemployment and widespread poverty, as evidence that the economy was under significant strain. Supporters, however, argue that Buhari faced extraordinary challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and global economic disruptions, while making gains in infrastructure and some security sectors.
The comments also come as Sirika continues to face legal proceedings over allegations of fraud linked to aviation contracts during his time in office. He has denied wrongdoing, and the cases remain before the courts.
