Nigerian entrepreneur Iyinoluwa Aboyeji has gone viral after reflecting on his journey from becoming a millionaire at 23 to co-founding Andela and Flutterwave, two of Africa’s most successful billion-dollar technology companies. Speaking on James Dumoulin’s School of Hard Knocks podcast, the 35-year-old discussed the lessons behind building globally recognized businesses from Nigeria.
Aboyeji explained that he co-founded Andela in 2014 with the goal of developing world-class African software engineers for the global market. The company went on to raise hundreds of millions of dollars from international investors, including the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, and later achieved a valuation of around $1.5 billion. In 2016, he co-founded Flutterwave, which became one of Africa’s leading fintech companies and reached a $3 billion valuation following its 2022 funding round.
During the interview, Aboyeji said, “I became a millionaire at 23,” while crediting bold networking, persistence and solving real problems for his success. He also noted that Mark Zuckerberg, through the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, backed Andela during a major funding round, helping accelerate the company’s global growth. Today, Aboyeji leads Future Africa, a venture platform that invests in and mentors the next generation of African founders.
The interview has inspired many young entrepreneurs across Africa, although claims circulating online about Aboyeji’s personal net worth remain unverified. While he has helped build billion-dollar companies, there is no publicly confirmed evidence that he is personally a billionaire.
