Cape Verde’s national football team received a rousing hero’s welcome after returning home from a historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign that captured the imagination of football fans around the world.
Thousands of supporters lined the streets of the capital, Praia, as the Blue Sharks arrived to jubilant celebrations on the country’s Independence Day. Fans waved flags, played drums and sang patriotic songs while players rode through the city in an open-top parade, with airport staff and well-wishers applauding the squad for achieving the nation’s greatest-ever football milestone.
Cape Verde, a nation of just over 500,000 people, became one of the smallest countries ever to reach the FIFA World Cup knockout stage in its tournament debut. After an unbeaten group-stage campaign that included impressive performances against football heavyweights, the Blue Sharks pushed defending champions Argentina to the limit before suffering a dramatic 3-2 extra-time defeat in one of the tournament’s most memorable matches.
Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha emerged as one of the stars of the tournament, producing a string of remarkable saves—including several against Lionel Messi. After the match, Messi praised the Cape Verde captain’s performance before the pair exchanged jerseys in a moment that quickly went viral. Defender Sidny Lopes Cabral also became an instant fan favourite after scoring a stunning extra-time equaliser that many have tipped as one of the goals of the tournament.
Speaking during the homecoming, head coach Bubista said the team’s performances proved their qualification was “no accident” and showed the world what Cape Verdean football is capable of achieving. President José Maria Neves echoed that sentiment, declaring that although Argentina advanced, “Cape Verde triumphed” by winning the hearts of football fans everywhere.
Although their World Cup journey has ended, the Blue Sharks return home with their heads held high, having inspired a generation and firmly placed Cape Verde on the global football map.
