A viral video circulating on social media has sparked widespread reactions after showing security operatives detaining a man alleged to be a major supplier of ammunition to armed bandits operating across Nigeria’s North-West. However, no Nigerian security agency has officially confirmed the arrest or the claims surrounding the footage.
The video, which surfaced on June 29, shows a suspect seated on the ground while surrounded by dozens of 7.62mm rounds, ammunition belts and crates bearing military-style markings. Social media posts accompanying the footage claim the man supplied bullets to criminal groups responsible for attacks in Zamfara, Katsina and Sokoto states, where bandit violence has claimed thousands of lives in recent years.
The footage quickly gained traction online, with many Nigerians expressing shock and demanding tougher action against individuals accused of supporting armed groups through the illegal supply of weapons and ammunition. Others described such suppliers as key enablers of the insecurity affecting communities across the North-West.
Despite the widespread circulation of the video, the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, and the Department of State Services (DSS) had not issued any official statement as of Monday confirming the suspect’s identity, the location of the arrest, or the authenticity of the claims.
The lack of official confirmation has prompted calls for caution, with security analysts urging the public not to draw conclusions until authorities verify the incident. Similar viral security videos have previously circulated with incomplete or misleading information before official investigations clarified the facts.
