Real Madrid’s attempt to sign Julián Álvarez from Atlético Madrid has already produced one of the most dramatic transfer stories of the summer.
Madrid submitted a €150 million offer for the Argentina striker, but Atlético rejected it outright. The forward’s contract runs until 2030 and contains a reported €500 million release clause, giving Atlético an enormous amount of leverage.
At the time, the €150 million offer looked like an extraordinary amount of money. Now it looks even more complicated.
Because Álvarez reportedly wants to leave Atlético, but the club still refuses to negotiate. More importantly, his preferred destination has been reported as Barcelona rather than Real Madrid. Atlético have also rejected Barcelona approaches and have repeatedly insisted that they do not intend to sell him.
That creates an unusual situation where the player, Atlético and the interested clubs all appear to want different things. And this is where the €150 million Madrid bid becomes interesting. Could Real Madrid’s offer have been partly about football and partly about making Barcelona’s pursuit even harder?
There has been plenty of speculation that Madrid’s approach was designed to disrupt Barcelona’s attempt to sign Álvarez. Real Madrid and Barcelona fighting over the same player is already unusual enough, but doing so while Álvarez is contracted to Atlético makes the situation even more politically charged.
Atlético’s response has been clear: money isn’t the issue. The club has reportedly rejected offers reaching €200 million and continues to point towards the €500 million clause. That means Real Madrid probably cannot simply keep increasing its offer until Atlético eventually gives in.
There is another problem: Álvarez is now back in Atlético training. Despite publicly expressing his desire to leave, he has returned to the squad and is being reintegrated into Diego Simeone’s plans.
So what should we expect? Unless Atlético suddenly changes its position, Álvarez may actually begin the season in Madrid.
The bigger question is whether the relationship between player and club can be repaired. Atlético still see him as a central part of their project, while Álvarez’s desire for a move — particularly to Barcelona has created a situation that could remain uncomfortable even if he stays.
Real Madrid may have offered €150 million. Atlético basically said: that’s not enough to make us sell. And right now, they still hold the cards.
