Nigeria’s stock market has climbed to the top of the global rankings after overtaking South Korea to become the world’s best-performing equity market in 2026, delivering another strong trading session that added ₦962 billion to investors’ wealth.

The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) extended its remarkable rally as renewed buying interest in major banking, consumer goods and industrial stocks pushed the market higher. The latest gains lifted the NGX above South Korea’s Kospi in dollar-adjusted returns, making Nigeria the best-performing stock market among those tracked globally this year.

Market capitalization increased by approximately ₦962 billion, reflecting growing investor confidence despite broader economic challenges. Analysts attribute the rally to ongoing economic reforms, improved foreign investor sentiment, stronger corporate earnings and rising global oil prices, which have boosted expectations for Nigeria’s economy.

The milestone comes after months of strong performance on the NGX, with equities delivering some of the highest returns in the world. While the stock market has continued to attract both local and foreign investors, economists caution that the rally has not fully translated into relief for many Nigerians still grappling with high inflation and rising living costs.

South Korea’s Kospi, which had led global markets for much of the year, has experienced increased volatility in recent days, allowing Nigerian equities to move ahead in the rankings. Investors will now be watching closely to see whether the NGX can maintain its momentum in the second half of the year as companies begin releasing half-year financial results.

The achievement marks another significant milestone for Nigeria’s capital market, reinforcing its growing appeal to investors seeking high-growth opportunities in emerging economies.
