Nigeria Eyes Frontier Market Upgrade as Naira Weakens on Parallel Market

nigeria regains frontier market upgrade

Nigeria has received a potential boost to investor confidence after S&P Dow Jones Indices placed the country on its 2027 Country Classification Watchlist for a possible upgrade to Frontier Market status, even as the naira continued to weaken in the parallel foreign exchange market.

The watchlist designation signals that international index providers are closely monitoring Nigeria’s ongoing capital market reforms and improvements in foreign exchange accessibility. If the reforms are sustained, Nigeria could regain Frontier Market classification, potentially attracting increased foreign portfolio investment and improving liquidity in the country’s financial markets. Analysts say the development reflects growing confidence in recent policy measures aimed at strengthening market transparency and investor participation.

Despite the positive long-term outlook, pressure on the naira persists outside the official foreign exchange window. Currency traders reported the naira exchanging between ₦1,400 and ₦1,405 per US dollar in the parallel market, highlighting continued demand for foreign currency and the gap between official and unofficial exchange rates.

Economists note that while inclusion on the S&P watchlist is an encouraging signal for international investors, achieving an actual market upgrade will depend on Nigeria maintaining macroeconomic stability, deepening capital market reforms and ensuring easier access to foreign exchange for investors. They also stress that sustained exchange-rate stability will remain a key factor in improving investor confidence.

The contrasting developments illustrate the mixed state of Nigeria’s economy. On one hand, global financial institutions are recognising progress in market reforms and governance. On the other, persistent pressure on the naira underscores the challenges that remain in stabilising the foreign exchange market and easing demand for dollars.

Market participants will now be watching closely to see whether continued reforms can translate into a formal Frontier Market upgrade in 2027 while supporting stronger currency performance in the months ahead.
