The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Eware II, has summoned native doctors, traditional priests, and priestesses across Edo State for an emergency meeting aimed at addressing the growing insecurity affecting several communities in the state.
The meeting, scheduled for Tuesday in Benin City, comes amid increasing concerns over kidnappings, cult-related violence, and other criminal activities reported in part of Edo, including Benin City, Auchi, Ekpoma, and surrounding areas.
According to the Benin Palace, the gathering is part of efforts to explore traditional and cultural approaches that can complement ongoing security operations by government agencies. The palace said the Oba remains deeply concerned about the safety of residents and believes traditional institutions have a role to play in restoring peace and order.
The development follows the Edo State Government’s ongoing “Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists,” launched by Governor Monday Okpebholo. Authorities say the operation has led to more than 300 arrests and intensified security actions across the state.
Palace sources noted that the meeting will focus on identifying ways traditional practitioners can contribute to discouraging crime, exposing criminal elements, and promoting community responsibility. The Oba has previously used traditional institutions to support campaigns against human trafficking and other social problems.
A second meeting involving youth leaders and community stakeholders is expected to hold on Wednesday as part of broader consultations on security challenges facing the state.
