The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is preparing to extend Luis de la Fuente’s contract until 2030 after the veteran coach guided Spain to FIFA World Cup glory and completed one of the most successful managerial runs in the country’s history.
De la Fuente’s current deal runs until the end of UEFA Euro 2028, but RFEF president Rafael Louzán has confirmed that the federation wants the 65-year-old to remain in charge through the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Spain will co-host alongside Portugal and Morocco. Formal negotiations are expected to begin after the summer, with the proposed agreement also including an improved salary.
Spain sealed the 2026 FIFA World Cup title with a dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the final, making De la Fuente the oldest manager ever to win football’s biggest prize. The triumph added to an already remarkable spell in charge that includes Spain’s UEFA Nations League title in 2023 and the UEFA Euro 2024 crown.
“Luis de la Fuente has earned our full confidence,” Louzán said while discussing the federation’s plans. “He has shown his quality, his commitment and his ability to build a winning national team. We want him to continue leading this project.”
The proposed extension signals Spain’s desire for continuity rather than change following a golden era under De la Fuente. Since taking over the national team, he has built on the core of Spain’s emerging generation while blending experienced leaders into a squad capable of dominating major tournaments.
With the 2030 World Cup set to be hosted partly on Spanish soil, the federation believes retaining the coach who delivered the country’s second World Cup title is the best way to maintain stability heading into football’s biggest event.
The move also reflects growing confidence in Spain’s long-term project. Instead of waiting until Euro 2028 to discuss his future, the RFEF is looking to secure De la Fuente’s services well in advance, ensuring the architect of Spain’s recent success remains at the helm as preparations begin for a home World Cup.
