The crowds, made up of nationals from several African countries, are seeking emergency evacuation assistance amid renewed xenophobic tensions that have spread across parts of the country.
The latest wave of anxiety follows weeks of anti-migrant demonstrations, vigilante raids, and intimidation campaigns targeting foreign nationals. Although South African authorities have condemned unlawful attacks and warned citizens against taking immigration enforcement into their own hands, many migrants say they no longer feel safe remaining in the country. Reports indicate that thousands have already fled or registered with their embassies for possible repatriation.
Several African governments have begun coordinating evacuation efforts, with buses and flights arranged for citizens wishing to return home. Humanitarian organisations have also raised concerns about displaced migrants lacking shelter, food, and medical support as they wait outside diplomatic missions for assistance.
The unrest comes against the backdrop of South Africa’s worsening unemployment crisis and growing anti-immigration sentiment, with protesters accusing undocumented migrants of taking jobs and straining public services. Economists, however, warn that a mass exodus of foreign workers could worsen labour shortages in sectors such as agriculture, retail, construction, hospitality, and transport, potentially hurting the country’s already fragile economy.
