Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been conferred with the traditional title of Atayese of Yorubaland by the Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, Telu I, during a ceremony at the royal palace in Iwo, Osun State. The monarch said the honour recognizes VDM’s outspoken advocacy, influence among young Nigerians and contributions to social accountability through the Ratel Movement.
During the event, the Oluwo welcomed the activist warmly and urged him and his supporters to channel their influence toward nation-building and active participation in governance. The monarch also emphasized Iwo’s openness to people from all backgrounds and reaffirmed the importance of traditional institutions in recognizing individuals making societal impact.
The conferment has generated mixed reactions online. While many congratulated VeryDarkMan and praised the recognition of his activism, others questioned whether the title should extend beyond Iwoland or represent the entirety of Yorubaland. Despite the debate, the ceremony has become one of the most talked-about traditional events on Nigerian social media this week.
