Reality TV star and former Big Brother Naija winner Mercy Eke has reignited conversations about cosmetic surgery after a resurfaced podcast interview revealed why she underwent a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) in 2018.
Speaking candidly about her decision, Mercy admitted that beauty trends and peer pressure heavily influenced her choice, despite already being comfortable with her body.
“To be very truthful, it was the trend at the time. I did my body in 2018. I think it was because of the trend, maybe peer pressure. Everyone was doing it.”
She explained that although she considered herself naturally slim, she opted for liposuction and a BBL because she felt her stomach was “a little too much.”
Mercy also revealed that she kept the procedure a secret from her mother out of fear that she would discourage her from going through with it.
“I was really scared; I didn’t tell my mom because I knew she would discourage me.”
The reality star described the recovery as one of the most painful experiences of her life, recalling that patients cannot sit or sleep on their buttocks for about two weeks after surgery and must instead lie on their stomachs.
“You can’t sleep on your bum for 14 days, and you’ll cry for the first three days from the pain.”
She added that the mandatory post-operative massages were particularly agonizing but maintained that the final results made the difficult recovery worthwhile.
The resurfaced interview has gone viral amid renewed concerns over cosmetic surgery in Nigeria following reports of deaths linked to BBL complications, prompting fresh debate about the risks associated with aesthetic procedures.
While some social media users criticised Mercy for attributing the decision to peer pressure, arguing that cosmetic surgery is ultimately a personal choice, others praised her honesty and openness about both the motivation and the painful recovery process. The discussion has also renewed calls for greater public awareness of the health risks involved and stricter regulation of cosmetic surgery clinics in Nigeria.
