President Bola Tinubu has officially flagged off Section I of the 700-kilometre Akwanga–Bauchi–Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri Superhighway, describing the project as a major step toward boosting trade, improving connectivity and strengthening economic growth across northern Nigeria. The ceremony marked the commencement of the 125-kilometre Akwanga–Jos section, one of five phases that make up the ambitious corridor stretching into the North-East.
Represented at the event by APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, Tinubu said the superhighway is one of the flagship infrastructure projects under his Renewed Hope Agenda. Minister of Works David Umahi announced that the Federal Government has approved an initial ₦111 billion for the project’s take-off, with the highway expected to improve logistics, reduce travel time, stimulate commerce and enhance security along the corridor.
Meanwhile, residents in parts of Lagos are once again counting losses after torrential rainfall triggered severe flash floods that submerged homes, blocked roads and disrupted electricity supply in several communities. Authorities confirmed that floodwaters affected infrastructure around a major power substation, raising concerns about localized outages as emergency teams worked to restore normal operations.
Lagos State officials renewed warnings against indiscriminate roadside waste dumping, blaming clogged drainage channels for worsening the flooding. The government also announced fresh emergency demolitions of illegal structures obstructing waterways, insisting that stricter enforcement is necessary to reduce the impact of recurring floods during the rainy season.
