José Mourinho has made it clear that his concerns about Vinicius Jr’s current form have not changed his backing of the Real Madrid forward.
The manager has repeatedly defended the Brazilian since taking charge, including after Vinicius was booed by sections of the Santiago Bernabéu crowd during the Champions League win over Inter Milan on September 8. Mourinho accompanied him toward the bench and applauded him after his substitution.
Mourinho later explained that Vinicius was not yet at his best, but praised his work rate and commitment. He also said that a player who gives everything for the team deserves respect.
That relationship has become one of the more interesting parts of Mourinho’s return to Madrid.
The Issue Is Form, Not Mourinho’s Trust
Vinicius has faced questions about his attacking output, particularly after Real Madrid’s 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid on September 20. He was substituted after 54 minutes in the derby as Mourinho looked for a response while Madrid were down to 10 men.
However, Mourinho’s public comments suggest the substitution should not automatically be read as a loss of confidence.
The coach has consistently separated two things: Vinicius’ current level and his importance to the team. Mourinho believes the forward can still be the player who changes difficult matches, but expects him to continue contributing while he works toward his best form.
Why Mourinho’s Approach Matters
The bigger story is how Mourinho is managing one of Real Madrid’s biggest stars while expectations remain high.
Earlier in September, Mourinho described the best version of Vinicius as a player capable of deciding tight matches. He has also highlighted the forward’s defensive work and willingness to contribute away from the ball.
That gives Vinicius a clear path back into the spotlight. Mourinho is offering public protection, but his comments also make it clear that reputation alone does not guarantee 90 minutes every week.
For Real Madrid, the question now is whether Vinicius can turn that support into consistent performances as the season develops.
