Barcelona’s Double Manchester City Reunion Could Change the Shape of Their Season

cancelo and rodri return to barca

Barcelona are not just signing two experienced players. They are bringing back a familiar partnership from Manchester City that could give Hansi Flick exactly what his team needs for the new season.

João Cancelo is returning to Barcelona after agreeing to terminate his contract with Al Hilal, while Rodri is set to join from Manchester City after the clubs reached an agreement worth €60 million upfront plus up to €16.5 million in bonuses. Rodri is expected to sign until 2030.

The two players already know each other well from their time at City, and their reunion could be particularly useful for Barcelona because they solve very different problems.

Rodri Changes Barcelona’s Midfield

Rodri is the headline signing. The 30-year-old arrives as one of the most accomplished midfielders in world football, having won the 2024 Ballon d’Or and 12 major trophies during his seven seasons at Manchester City.

But Barcelona are not bringing him in simply because he is a big name. They need control. Barcelona have plenty of technically gifted players who can move the ball quickly, but Rodri gives them something different. He can slow games down when necessary, protect the defense and dictate where the game is played.

His arrival could therefore allow players such as Pedri and Gavi to operate further forward while Rodri takes responsibility for the deeper midfield role.

There is one concern, though. Rodri has recently been recovering from back surgery and is expected to miss some early-season action, making his medical and gradual return especially important.

Cancelo Gives Flick Another Weapon

Cancelo’s return is less glamorous but could be just as useful. The Portuguese full-back already knows Barcelona after previous loan spells, and his ability to operate on either side of the defence gives Flick another tactical option. Reports indicate he will return as a free agent after terminating his Al Hilal contract.

His biggest strength is what happens when Barcelona have possession. Cancelo is comfortable moving forward, creating overloads and joining attacks rather than simply staying deep. That fits naturally into Barcelona’s possession-based approach.

The challenge will be defensive balance. With Barcelona already possessing plenty of attacking talent, Flick needs his full-backs to know when to attack and when to protect the defence. Cancelo’s return gives him another experienced option, but it also means the manager will have to find the right balance.

The Manchester City Connection Could Matter

There is something else interesting about these transfers. Rodri and Cancelo were teammates at Manchester City from 2019, meaning Barcelona are effectively bringing in two players who already understand each other’s football.

That could make the transition easier, especially for Cancelo, who already knows the club. For Barcelona, this is not simply about adding two famous names. It is about building a team with more control, experience and tactical flexibility.

If Rodri returns to his best physically and Cancelo can reproduce his strongest Barcelona performances, these two moves could end up being among the most important decisions of Barcelona’s summer. And suddenly, the question around Barcelona is no longer whether they have enough attacking talent.

It is whether they can finally find the balance needed to turn all that talent into another serious European campaign.
