Nigerian TikTok star Peller has sparked another debate about young marriage after pushing back at critics who believe he and Jarvis are too young to settle down. In a viral video, Peller argued that the reason many parents discourage their children from marrying early is ultimately economic.
“The reason your parents tell you not to marry early is because of poverty.”
The comment comes as Peller and fellow content creator Jarvis have moved ahead with their marriage plans. Peller, who turned 21 in May, recently paid Jarvis’ bride price in Edo, while their relationship has continued to attract enormous attention online.
There is some truth behind Peller’s argument. Poverty and economic insecurity are recognised factors associated with early marriage, particularly in poorer households. Research also shows that economic shocks can influence decisions around when people marry.
But saying poverty is the reason parents tell young people not to marry is probably too simple. Parents worry about more than money.
They may be concerned about emotional maturity, the ability to communicate during conflict, managing responsibilities, building a household and understanding that marriage is considerably more demanding than dating. A person can have money and still be completely unprepared for marriage.
And Peller’s situation illustrates why the conversation is complicated. Unlike many young people his age, he has built a successful career as a content creator and appears to have significant financial opportunities. That gives him a level of independence that many 21-year-olds do not have.
But financial stability and marital readiness are not the same thing. The interesting question is therefore not whether Peller is “too young” based purely on his age. It is whether he and Jarvis have the maturity, compatibility and support system needed to build a marriage that survives after the cameras stop rolling.
There is also an important distinction between early marriage and child marriage. Peller is an adult making a decision about his own marriage. Arguments about the risks associated with child marriage should not automatically be applied to every young adult who chooses to marry.
At the same time, his enormous social-media audience means his comments could influence younger followers who may interpret his experience as proof that age simply does not matter.
It does matter, but age is only one factor. Money can remove some of the pressure that makes marriage difficult. It cannot guarantee patience, emotional intelligence, loyalty or compatibility.
So Peller may have identified one reason parents worry about early marriage. He probably hasn’t identified the only one.
