The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun publishing the personal particulars, academic credentials and other nomination documents submitted by candidates contesting the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections, opening the process to public scrutiny.
The publication, which commenced on August 1, is in line with the Electoral Act and INEC’s revised timetable for the 2027 general election. Among the high-profile presidential candidates whose documents are being displayed are President Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, alongside candidates seeking seats in the Senate and House of Representatives.
According to INEC, displaying candidates’ personal particulars is a statutory requirement aimed at promoting transparency and giving Nigerians an opportunity to examine the documents submitted by aspirants before the elections. The process also allows any interested person who believes information supplied by a candidate is false to challenge it through the appropriate legal channels within the timeframe provided by law.
The publication marks another major milestone in Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 elections. With the display of candidates’ particulars now underway, political parties are expected to shift fully into campaign mode, as the official campaign period for the presidential and National Assembly elections is scheduled to begin on August 19.
The release of the documents is expected to attract significant public attention, particularly given the prominence of the leading presidential contenders and the heightened political atmosphere ahead of the polls.
INEC has encouraged citizens, civil society organizations and the media to participate in the scrutiny process as part of efforts to strengthen accountability and confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
