Afrobeats superstar Davido has opened up about carving out his own identity in the music industry despite coming from one of Nigeria’s wealthiest families, saying very few children of billionaires have achieved the level of independent success he has.
Speaking in a new interview with VIBE Magazine ahead of the release of his sixth studio album, ORIADÉ, the singer reflected on the challenges of proving himself beyond his famous surname. Davido, born David Adeleke, is the son of billionaire businessman Adedeji Adeleke, but said he deliberately avoided relying on his family’s wealth while pursuing music.
According to the Grammy-nominated artist, he left college early to chase music full-time and initially kept his privileged background out of the spotlight because he wanted fans to judge him based on his talent rather than his family’s status. He argued that while many wealthy heirs have attempted careers in entertainment, few have managed to build a global brand comparable to his.
Davido also revealed that, despite enjoying luxury today, he sometimes misses the freedom of living a normal life.
He joked that one of the things he would love to do is drive himself in a Toyota to Publix without attracting attention, saying fame has made simple everyday experiences almost impossible.
The interview coincides with the release of ORIADÉ, which marks 15 years since Davido broke into the Nigerian music scene. The 13-track album sees the Afrobeats star return to a more African-inspired sound while reflecting on his journey, family, legacy and personal growth.
Davido also spoke warmly about his family, crediting them for helping him through personal tragedies and public controversies over the years. He added that while music has transformed his life, he would prefer his own children to choose careers outside the industry because of the pressures that come with fame.
The comments have sparked debate online, with many fans applauding Davido’s work ethic and longevity, while others questioned whether his privileged upbringing made his path easier than most aspiring artists.
