The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Lagos State by two weeks, giving eligible residents until July 26, 2026, to register ahead of future elections. The extension follows feedback from stakeholders and is intended to ensure more eligible Nigerians are captured in the National Register of Voters.
Alongside the extension, INEC has launched a self-service online registration platform for first-time voters. The new system allows prospective voters to begin their registration process on their personal devices through the commission’s dedicated CVR portal before completing the required in-person biometric capture at an INEC registration center. The online platform became operational on July 8, 2026, as part of efforts to improve accessibility and reduce congestion at registration centers.
INEC said the digital initiative is designed to simplify voter registration, improve service delivery and encourage greater participation, particularly among young and first-time voters. The commission urged eligible Nigerians who have not yet registered to take advantage of both the deadline extension and the new online option before the exercise closes on Sunday, July 26.
The CVR exercise, which began in August 2025, is a key part of preparations for future electoral activities, with the commission reaffirming its commitment to ensuring every eligible citizen has a fair opportunity to register and participate in Nigeria’s democratic process.
