Military tensions between the United States and Iran have intensified once again after both countries exchanged fresh strikes around the strategic Strait of Hormuz, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to declare the interim ceasefire “over” and triggering another surge in global oil prices.
The latest escalation follows renewed attacks on commercial shipping and military targets in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes. U.S. forces responded with a new wave of strikes on Iranian military infrastructure, targeting missile sites, air defence systems and other strategic assets. Iran retaliated with fresh attacks, raising fears that the conflict could widen further.
Speaking on the sidelines of the NATO summit, President Trump said the temporary agreement between Washington and Tehran had effectively collapsed.
“As far as I’m concerned, it’s over.”
He also indicated that further military action against Iran remained a possibility, signalling a tougher U.S. stance after days of escalating hostilities.
Financial markets reacted immediately to the renewed conflict. Brent crude climbed sharply toward $80 per barrel, while U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also posted significant gains as traders priced in the growing risk of supply disruptions. Shipping companies have begun reassessing operations through the Strait of Hormuz amid rising security concerns, adding further pressure to global energy markets.
Analysts warn that any prolonged disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could have far-reaching consequences for global energy supplies, inflation and fuel prices. Governments across the Gulf remain on high alert, while international leaders continue urging both Washington and Tehran to return to diplomatic negotiations before the conflict escalates into a broader regional war.
Despite mounting tensions, diplomatic channels have not been completely closed, though prospects for an immediate return to talks appear increasingly uncertain as military exchanges continue.
