Former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff has stirred widespread debate after defending President Bola Tinubu’s performance in office, pointing to the President’s high-profile international engagements as evidence of growing global recognition.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sheriff argued that Tinubu has strengthened Nigeria’s diplomatic standing by securing official invitations from major world powers. He described the visits as significant milestones, saying they reflect the country’s renewed relevance on the global stage.
Sheriff said:
“President is doing very well. Within the last 30 years or so, only one President was invited to Buckingham Palace officially. Secondly, he was also invited to France.”
He added:
“Nations are interested in Nigeria. The President is doing very well. He is talking with the super powers. In the last 30 years, he was the second president to be invited to Buckingham Palace, and then, France.”
His comments quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions across social media. Supporters agreed that the invitations demonstrate improved diplomatic relations and increased international engagement under Tinubu’s administration. However, many critics argued that foreign invitations should not be presented as major achievements while millions of Nigerians continue to grapple with rising inflation, high food prices, unemployment and insecurity.
