Morocco have been dealt a major setback ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against France after star forward Ismael Saibari was ruled out through injury.
Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi confirmed that the 25-year-old attacker will miss Thursday’s blockbuster clash after suffering a hamstring injury during Morocco’s Round of 16 victory over Canada. Although the coach remains hopeful Saibari could return later in the tournament if Morocco progress, he will play no part in the rematch against France.
Saibari has been one of the standout performers of the World Cup, making history as the first African player to score in each of his country’s opening three World Cup matches. His goals have been instrumental in Morocco’s remarkable run to a second consecutive World Cup quarter-final, making his absence a significant blow to the Atlas Lions’ hopes.
Despite losing one of their most dangerous attacking players, Morocco remain confident ahead of the showdown with Kylian Mbappé’s France. Coach Ouahbi insisted his side would not alter its tactical approach, stressing that Morocco have enough quality and depth to compete with the 2022 runners-up. He also dismissed suggestions that reaching the quarter-finals alone should satisfy his team, reiterating that their ambition is to win the World Cup.
Saibari’s likely replacement is expected to be Soufiane Rahimi, who impressed in the previous round by scoring twice after coming off the bench against Canada. Morocco will be hoping the in-form forward can fill the void left by their injured talisman as they seek revenge for their 2-0 semi-final defeat to France at the 2022 World Cup.
