Manchester United have identified Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni as their priority signing to strengthen the heart of their midfield, but a potential deal faces significant financial and sporting hurdles.
The French international is viewed by United as the ideal long-term replacement for Casemiro following the club’s renewed midfield rebuild. Reports indicate the Premier League side have already informed people close to Tchouaméni that they cannot match the salary he currently earns at Real Madrid, meaning any transfer would require the player to accept reduced wages.
United remain admirers of the 26-year-old, who joined Real Madrid from AS Monaco in 2022 and has established himself as one of Europe’s top defensive midfielders. While the club are reportedly willing to make a substantial offer, Real Madrid continue to regard Tchouaméni as a key part of their long-term plans and are reluctant to sanction his departure before his contract expires in 2028.
The proposed move has become even more complicated by the player’s own stance. Tchouaméni is understood to be happy at the Santiago Bernabéu and has shown little indication that he wants to leave, leaving United with the difficult task of convincing both the player and his club.
News of United’s interest has generated excitement among supporters, many of whom see the France international as the perfect successor to Casemiro because of his defensive awareness, passing range and physical presence. Others, however, have questioned whether committing more than €100 million and taking on a high salary package would be prudent given the club’s ongoing financial restructuring.
For now, Manchester United’s admiration for Tchouaméni remains strong, but unless Real Madrid soften their position or the midfielder agrees to a lower wage package, the transfer appears difficult to complete.
