Five-time world champions Brazil came from a goal down to beat Japan 2-1 at the Houston stadium Monday evening and advance to the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, reports Newslegend.

Japan got ahead in the 31st minute of the round of 32 contest through Kaishu Sano and it seemed an upset was on the horizon after a few missed chances by the Brazilians.

Reprieve however came the way of the Samba boys when former Manchester United midfielder Casemiro delivered a textbook header to restore parity off a cross by Gabriel Megalheas.

Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli came off the substitute bench to strike late for Brazil’s winner in the 90th minute.

The win means that Carlo Ancelotti’s side will face the winners of the Norway versus Cote d’Ivoire game scheduled for Tuesday.

Brazil have not won the World Cup since they last laid their hands on it in 2002 when they defeated Germany 2-0 in the final in Yokohama in Japan.
