The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, has encouraged corps members to embrace entrepreneurship and build multiple income streams instead of relying solely on their monthly allowance.
Speaking during a working visit to the NYSC Kogi State Secretariat, Nafiu urged serving corps members to identify market needs and develop practical business ideas that could sustain them beyond their service year.
Using the widely discussed akara business as an example, the NYSC boss advised corps members not to look down on humble ventures, stressing that many successful entrepreneurs started with small businesses. He reminded them that Nigeria’s large population presents enormous opportunities for innovation and wealth creation, urging them to remain creative, disciplined and prudent in managing their finances.
Nafiu also reiterated the importance of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program, encouraging corps members to take the training seriously as a pathway to self-reliance.
On welfare, he pledged to engage the Kogi State Government over state allowances and directed that corps members should no longer be posted to private organizations that fail to provide accommodation, stipends or meaningful mentorship. He added that NYSC plans to improve camp transportation support, feeding and the quality of kits issued to corps members from next year.
